Her full name is Mamie Robert Wilson Sewl Crawford but she goes
by Mamie Crawford, or just Mamie. Mrs. Crawford was born
in Alabama in 1900. When she was 1 1/2 years old she
crawled into a fire and was burned badly across her torso,
arms and neck up to her chin. Her burns made
it particularly difficult to find work in already tough
times and conditions. When Mrs. Crawford was around 30
years old she came to Boston to help at a foster home.
At 104 years old Mamie Crawford is the oldest member
of Charles St. African Methodist Episcopal Church. Throughout her
many
years there she has shown unending kindness and generosity to the
children
in church introducing them to the different groups and programs
the church has to offer.
